Tether

Automated text message poem

'Tether' is an automated text message poem. When visitors text the word 'tether' to a specific phone number, over the course of 10 minutes they receive a piece of writing. The poem is about cellular/biological motherhood and how that relationship is mediated through our cellular phones. People receive this intimate piece of writing directly to their phones. When I wrote this, I was interested in the examination of mother at a time when most of my friends and I were in more frequent contact with ours, for better or worse. Texting the poem right to your phone immediately placed the concept and the work literally “in your hands” as a viewer, and invited reflection on their own text engagement with their mother or parent, as well as on intimate exchanges in general, which nowadays so often occur via text.
