Neches takes place on the Neches River in East Texas and is about a moment when a sensorial experience in a familiar place triggers a deep memory. I wanted to make a film that captures those memories as moments of crossover/overlap, so throughout the film we see an older woman, her mother, and her younger self in the same river landscape 50 years apart. I was thinking about how much a landscape can change in the span of a human lifetime (a forest can disappear) while still evoking easy warmth and familiarity when you encounter it again decades later (kayaking down the same curve in the river, or sitting under the same tree your mom did) and how human relationships are like that, too.
